handle is hein.intprop/corep0194 and id is 1 raw text is: Patent Office Report for 1945
The Annual Report of the Secretary of Commerce for the fiscal year
ending June 30, 1945, includes the Patent Office Report covering the
same period, has not been made available in printed form for the
past few years. The entire Patent Office Report is here printed. It
should be kept in mind that this Report covers only the year July 1,
1944 to June 30, 1945 and that events occurring after the latter date
are not included.
Applications More Numerous
Applications for patents, including those covering plants,
designs and reissues, filed in the fiscal year ended June 30, 1945,
numbered 66,037, as against 54,165 in 1944, and exceeded the
total received in any corresponding period since 1940. In
the same twelve months there were filed 18,623 applications for
the initial registration and for the renewal of trade marks, com-
pared with 14,403 in the preceding year.
There were granted in the latest fiscal year 30,535 patents,
among them 26 for plants; 3,552 for designs, and 145 for re-
issues. This was 1,248 fewer than those issued in 1944. The
decline in the total granted was owing to a rise in the number
of applications received and requiring action and to a shortage
of technical help. On June 30, 1945, there were awaiting action
61,875 applications, that is, 15,667 more than on the same date
of 1944, or of any other previous year since 1930.
Interest in Patents Shown
Interest in patented inventions was evidenced by the larger
purchases of printed copies of patents. These were obtained
by inventors, industrialists and others. In the interval from
July 1, 1944, to June 30, 1945, a total of 4,302,423 copies were
sold. That was 101,590 above the sales in 1943-44 and 679,685
more than in 1942-43.
Public Register Initiated
To encourage and facilitate the wider use of patented inven-
tions in the postwar period, the Secretary of Commerce on May
15, 1945, authorized the establishment in the Patent Office of
a register of patents, the owners of which were willing to sell
or to license them for use by others. This registration began
on June 1, 1945. In the course of thirty days, more than 400
inquiries reached the Office from all sections of the country.
There were offered for registration 192 patents. Scientific
journals, commercial publications and daily newspapers have
Reprinted from 28 J. P. 0. S. 308.
