SIR: As directed by the 23(d section of the act of May 21st, 1861, establishing this office, I have the honor to lay before Congress the annexed list of the patents granted in the year 1862, so classified as to exhibit under appropriate heads the respective inventions to which said patents refer. An ajphabetical list of the patentees, with their places of residence, is also annexed, as required by the statute. The following tables will briefly but clearly explain the operations of the Patent Office during the past, as well as its condition at the: commencement of the present year: The number of applications during the year was 147 caveats issued 64 patents issued 75 The number of U. S. patents and assignments of U. S. patents in whole or in part, recorded and revived, 178 Amount of money received, $9,186 98 Amount of money on hand January 1st, 1862, 2,812 62 $11,999 60 Amount of expenditures, 9,391 83 Balance in the Treasury, $2,607 77
