PATENT OFIcE, Janzuftry, 1843.
Sni: In compliance with the law of Congres the Commissioner of
Patents has the honor to submit his thnual report.
Five hundred and seventeen patents have been issued during the year
1842, including thirteen reissues, and fif/cen additional improvemuents to
former patents, of which classified and alphabetical li,;ts are amexed, (mark-
ed B and C.)
During the same period, three hundred and lifty-two patents have ex-
,pired, as per list marked D.
The applications tbr patents during the year past amount to seven hun-
dred and sixy..one, and the number of caveats filed was two hundred and
ninety one.
The receipts of the office for 1842 amotut to S35,790 96, from which
$8,068 95 may be repaid on applications withdrawn, as per statement E.
The ordinary expenses of the Patent Office for the past year, including
Payments for the library arid for agriculturdl statistics, have been s'23,154 48 ,
leaving a nett balanco of $5,264 20, to be credited to the patent fund, as
per statement marked F.
The above expenditures do not inclide those iijcurred within the last
'ear, for the recovery of tle stolen jewels.
For the restoration of models, records, and drawings, under the act of
March 3, 1837, $14,060 02 have been expended, a per statement marked G.
The whole number of patents issued by the United States, previous to
January, 1843, was twelve thousand nine hundred and nineb/-two. The
teoltinuance of the depression of the money market, and the almost univer-
SaJlprostration of all business, operates very disadvantageously on the re-
ceipti of Jhis office, as many huidred applications are delayed solely frogi
the'.Want of funds or difficulty of remittance. The patents granted or th
Year, however, exceeded those of the year previous by lwenty, though
thtl have been less applitatiovns by eighty-six.
The Digest of Patents, coutibmed and brought down to January,.i84A
has beeu printed, and 700 copies distributed to the respective Siates, an[
