Advances In Automation Prompt Concern

Over Increased U.S. Unemployment

Increased use of automation to improve
worker productivity is causing short-run job
displacement and some unemployment be-
cause of a resultant shift in job require-
ments. The recent advent of microelectron-
ics has renewed the debate about whether
overall increases in unemployment will
occur in the long run. The probability is
unknown. Some forecast increased jobs,
others predict increased unemployment.

This study delves into the reasons for the
differences of opinions, identifies the Depart-
ment of Labor forecasts of occupational
changes that it expects, and presents some
information on the displaced worker.
