FOREWORD
This statutory index of materials on Indian law is part of the
triple index of materials on Indian law gathered by the Indian Law
Survey. It thus supplements the topical index, which is arranged
analytically, and the tribal index, in which pertinent materials are
arranged by tribe or reservation.
In this statutory index an effort has been made to annotate each
act of Congress, treaty, and joint or concurrent resolution with per-
tinent legal materials, statutory and nonstatutory. The annotations
include under each statutory item the following materials;
1. Reference to earlier and later statutes and treaties, which
supplement, amend, or repeal, or arc supplemented, emended, or re-
pealed by, the ann.ootated item. These materials include Indian and
foreign treaties promulgated between 1778 and 1939, and statutes on-
acted during the period from 1789 to 1939.
2. Reference to federal cases in which the statutory item is
cited. The period covered by these cases runs from 1790 to 1939.
3. Similar references to Attorneys' Gencral opinions in which
the statutory item is cited (1789 - 1939).
4. Parallel citations to Revised Statutes.
5. Parallel citations to the United States Code.
6. Historical annotations taken from the United States Code
Anno tated.
7. Publishe&l rdilings of the I:iterior Dopartment appearing in
volumes 1 to 56 of the Land Decisions - Interior Decisions series,
representing decisions promulgated between July 1881 and November
28, 1938.
8. Unpublished decisions and memoranda from the Interior De-
partment files promulgated between Octobor 31, 1917 and April 14,
1939.
9. Unpublished Justice Dopartmecnt file materials a;nd momoranda
of the Lands Division of the Department of Justice, bearing dates
from April 1929 to April 1939.
