AMERICAN

LEAGUE To ABOLISH CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
(Incorporated Under the Laws of the State of New Yod)

112 EAST 19TH STREET

NEW YORK

OBJECT: to abolish capital punishment in
every state in the Union, in the District of
Columbia, and in the American Territories
           and Dependencies.

                             May 4, 1931.

Dear Friend:

Recently a girl of twenty-two was ex-

ecuted by the State of Pennsylvania. Her brief

history is typical of that of many of the boys--

and occasionally girls--put to death in this

country. Of bad heredity and environment; illit-

erate; a wage earner at fourteen; married at

fifteen; a deserted mother at sixteen; a criminal

at seventeen!

The inequality of capital punishment is constantly

illustrated by the endless procession of the

physically, mentally and economically unfit who

pass through the Death House of our Commonwealths

year after year.

Will you not help with the renewed work we are

undertaking to end the death penalty in all states?

Will you not help us call the attention of organiza-

tions and law-makers to the stupidity and wasteful-

ness of continuing to erect gallows at the end of

the road instead of guide-posts at the beginning?

Will

We are sending you a brief summary of a recent case.

Hoping to hear from you,

                            Cordially yours,

                         EXECUTIVE SECRETARY.

you not, in short, join our organization and

with our work? Any contribution made by you

help to further our educational and research

in the Legislatures.
