318 Annals Am. Acad. Pol. & Soc. Sci. viii (1958)

handle is hein.cow/anamacp0318 and id is 1 raw text is: FOREWORD

The papers in this volume of THE ANNALS are the addresses presented at the
Annual Meeting of the Academy, April 11-12, 1958, at the Warwick Hotel, Phila-
delphia.
The audience was made up of representatives of many countries, including dele-
gates from 24 embassies; 14 United Nations missions; 95 universities and colleges;
144 civic, cultural, and scientific organizations; and a number of cities and states.
Attendance at the six sessions averaged 540 persons. A number of delegates and
observers spoke extemporaneously from the floor at the conclusion of the prepared
statements.
Several persons attending the meetings, observing that the roster of speakers in-
cluded representatives of six Asian countries, inquired as to why such a strategic
area as the Middle East had no spokesman on the platform. There were two rea-
sons for their absence. First, the area is the focus of world attention because of a
conflict between two local ways of life and also because of pressures attributed to
two antipodal world powers. The conflicts there are not, strictly speaking, of Asian
significance. Second, if this reason were not enough, it was known that the two
most appropriate speakers representing the area-Mr. Eban of Israel and Mr.
Malik of Lebanon-were not available.
