Properly understood, the Jake Powell episode
offers a fascinating insght into the convoluted
history of race relations and organized baseball
and even suggests that the rush to condemn John
Rockermay  eventually appear unwarranted.

            Who  w'as Jake Powell?
       In 1938, Alvin Jacob (Jake) Powell was
a 30-year old reserve outfielder for the defending
world champion Ne'w York Yankees.2 A native of
Silver Springs, Marylan d, Powell had grown up in
Wa shington, D. C. and had originally signed with
I's homnetown Wa shington Senator'. After a cup
of coffee with the Senators in 1930, he was
assigned to the minor leagues where he played for
Chattanooga, Dayton, and Albany, earning all-star
status in 1933 and 1934. In 1935, he retured to
the Senators on a full-time basis and wa one of
