    The United Kingdom hasa l rently  seen civil
actions being brought in the sporting context. In the
much  publicised case of Eliot v. Saunders (Unre-
porte), Drake J found it unnecessary to look beyond
the Court of Appeal decision of Condon v. Basi
([1 9851 2 All ER 453) which considered a claim for
damages  for negligence by the plaintiff who had
suffered a serious leg injury as a result of a tackle by
the defendant whilst paying in a local league footbal
match  In Elot it was agreed that the law does
provide an injured sportsman with the right to caim
compensaton.  In other words, t was agreed that
sports players owe each other a duty of care and
breach of this duty would render a defendant lable for
damages. The issue of whether sports players owe
each other a duty of care is no contentious A duty of
care, on an Atkinian basis (Donoghue v Stevenson
