     NSLI TAKES THE INITIATIVE
     TO ESTABLISH A SPORTS
     AUTHORITY FOR THE STATE
             OF WISCONSIN
In order to attract and host sports events
on the national and international levels in Wiscon-
sin, the National Sports Law Institute helped the
state create its own sports authority. This quasi-
public sports organization, known as the Wisconsin
Sports Authority, Inc., (WSA) will market Wiscon-
sin's sports assets to organizers of amateur and
professional sports events.
The WSA consists of 16 Board of Direc-
tors who are state and business leaders, including
Jim Fitzgerald, chairman of the Golden State
Warriors and former owner of the Milwaukee
Bucks; Bob Harlan, president of the Green Bay
Packers; Al McGuire, former Marquette University
basketball coach and current NBC TV Sports
commentator; as well as former baseball and
basketball stars and current business people such
as Sal Bando, Junior Bridgeman and Bob Lanier.
'We have to figure out where Wisconsin
fits into this puzzle. We're losing valuable dollars,
said Martin J. Greenberg, associate director of the
National Sports Law Institute and secretary of the
WSA. Greenberg said that Wisconsin could not
compete for events without a coordinated effort.
One of WSA's first tasks is to conduct an inventory
of Wisconsin sports venues and their potential as
host sites for events, according to Greenberg.
States such as Minnesota and Indiana
have created similar successful sports organiza-
tions. Minnesota officials have estimated they will
gain $40 million from amateur sporting events as a
result of implementing a sports authority. Also, in
1991 Minnesota is scheduled to host the National
Figure Skating Championships, the U.S. Open Gof
Tournament and the International Special Olym-
pics. Indiana has secured the 1991 and 1997
