NSLI Study: 60 Major League Teams Are Looking for a

                                       Better Home

By DON WATZ, NSLI Newsletter Editor
About 18 Major League Baseball teams would like a new stadium. Roughly 19 NFL teams are
looking for a new or rebuilt stadium and that includes Cleveland and Houston, who seem to have found
one. In the NBA, 13 teams want a new arena. The NHL has 10 teams hoping for a new arena.
With teams leaving the city, or threatening to leave, it is time someone keeps score. That is why the
National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School put together this 11 page scorecard.
It is likely that by the time this survey reaches your desk, there probably will be updates needed.
That is why the NSLI will keep this survey on file and continuously update it throughout 1996. This
scorecard of the stadium game will keep track of what could be the biggest issue right now in
 professional sports.
The NSLI has followed sports arena/stadium projects closely. For the past two years, The National
Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School along with Deloitte & Touche, LLP, has
sponsored the Sports Venues, Revenues & Values Conference. The conference studies arenalstadium
leases, financing options and the economic impact these projects have. This year's conference was held
Oct. 12-14 and had over 300 people in attendance. The audience included city managers, stadium project
managers, stadium authority members, building supervisors and other essential stadiumlarena personnel
  who are making newsworthy decisions.
Future newsletters will include detailed stories of current issues in this area, along with surveys and
stories of minor league and college projects.
        The overview:
THE PROJECT: All the information on this NSLI survey is believed to be accurate. However,
in researching items for this project, I have found published stories on the same subject contains different
information or dollar amounts. Therefore, with your cooperation, this survey could be updated to become
one of the most accurate accounts of stadium issues available.
THE RETURN: Unlimited access to this updated report. This will allow reporters to have a
very comprehensive update on issues throughout the nation at your fingertips. Upon request, this updated'
list -- with additional stories -- will be faxed or e-mailed to your office.
THE REQUEST: It is asked that if this service is of use to your writing project, that you give
the National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School credit as a source.
THE SOURCE OF COMMUNICATION: Please send your updates, stories, and notes
