SPORTS INDUSTRY SURVEY: PETE ROSE SHOULD BE ALLOWED BACK IN MLB
      By DON WATZ
Major League Baseball should permit Pete Rose to return.
That was one of many results of a sports industry poll
conducted by For the Record EXTRA. Over 50 sports editors, sports
broadcasters and sports lawyers completed the survey regarding
some of the key issues in Major League Baseball. (Complete results
on Page 3 of this newsletter).
By a large margin of 39 to 14, voters indicated that Pete Rose
should be allowed back into baseball. Reinstatement into Major
League Baseball would allow Rose to be on the Hall of Fame ballot.
Rose is currently banned from that ballot while he is on the MLB
      ineligible list.
Support, and probably interest, in the Pete Rose situation may
be waning with those who vote for the Hall of Fame. Rose received
14 write-in votes during the recent December 1992 balloting, in
which only Reggie Jackson was elected. By comparison, in 1991, Rose
received 41 write-in votes, in what would have been his first year
on the ballot. That same year three writers submitted blank ballots
to protest the Hall of Fame decision not to allow Rose on the
      ballot.
Rose takes a relaxed attitude. After the recent vote he said:
Hey, 14, that's my lucky (uniform) number. How many votes do I
      need to get?
Some writers think the time has come for Rose to be
      reinstated.
Bruce Jenkins, a Hall of Fame voter and sports journalist for
the San Francisco Chronicle writes: . ..many have become embittered
by an election process that somehow manages to by-pass Pete Rose.
You can write his name in -- I know I did -- it will earn you the
label of wild-eyed radical, a sure candidate to steal a few extra
prime-rib slices at the World Series banquet.
Speaking of reinstatement, another survey question asked if
Steve Howe should have been allowed back into MLB. In the EXTRA
poll, only 11 of 52 felt Howe should have been reinstated.
In a review of the 100 Most Compelling Personalities and
Images in 1992 published by USA Today, Howe was considered the
37th most compelling sports personality by a panel of writers. The
      explanation was:
