NSLI SPORTS DEPARTMENT SURVEY IS COMPLETED
The National Sports Law Institute invited sports editors, sports
copy editors and sports writers across the country to complete an
anonymous survey. The responses represent newspapers from each
geographic area in the country, including one survey each from
Alaska and Hawaii. Circulation totals range from 4,000 papers per
day to 500,000 on Sunday. The majority of the responses came from
    midwestern newspapers.
There were two sections to the survey. One survey asked sports
editors to detail the makeup of their sports department. We found:
of 302 sports department employees, 273 were males and 29 were
females. Of those, 26 were minorities.
Of 133 full-time sports writers: 124 were men, nine were women.
Fifteen were minorities. Of 70 full-time copy editors: 65 were
males and five were females. Six were minorities. More than 97
percent full-time employees had four-year college degrees.
The next survey asked sports editors, sports copy editors and
sports writers a series of sports law questions. It also asked for
    opinions on several different categories.
One question asked respondents to name three sports related
trials. Nearly 29 percent were unable to do so. The trial listed on
most surveys was the Pete Rose v. Major League Baseball in
Cincinnati. It was on 31 percent of the surveys.
On the subject of lawsuits, we asked our respondents if they
have had legal trouble with published work. Fourteen of the 77 said
they had been threatened with a lawsuit.
Of those, ten said it was merely a verbal threat and no action
was taken. Two said action is still pending. One writer went to
court but did not list the outcome. Another had to write a
retraction and publish a new story.
Of the sports stories published each day, many give us dollar
figures, terms, conditions, clauses, etc. of players contracts.
Interestingly, only eight of the 77 have ever seen an actual
    players contract.
Working on those contracts are agents. Therefore, we asked
respondents to name three sports agents. Mentioned on most surveys
was Bob Woolf, who was listed on 40 percent of the ballots. Leigh
Steinberg was listed 34 percent of the time. Dennis Gilbert was
third, being named on 23 percent of the surveys. Twenty-six percent
were unable to list three sports agents.
The rest of our survey was strictly a popularity contest.
Testing the judgement of writers who analyze the sporting industry
a little closer than most, we asked them to rank their favorites in
    four categories.
