BAR ASSOCIATION OF ERIE COUNTY

VOL. 58 I NO. 1 I FALL 2018

New YLC Co-chairs Assume Leadership, Name

Executive Council

Hello and welcome back! I hope everyone had a nice sum-
mer - it certainly was a scorcher. Things have been hot in
the Bar Association world as well.
In June, the New York State Bar Association held its
annual meeting in Cooperstown. Our own Sharon Stern
Gerstman was properly feted as her successful year at the
helm of the State Bar came to a close. Michael Miller of
Manhattan was sworn in as President. The agenda for the
House of Delegates meeting covered a wide spectrum of
issues. Of interest to our members, particularly the more
than 300 dedicated attorneys on the Erie County Bar
Association Assigned Counsel panel, is a Resolution passed
by the House to seek legislation in support of a raise in
the assigned counsel rate. The push for an increase was
led by the Criminal Justice section and the agenda item,
itself, was championed by our own Norm Effman,
NYSBA Vice President for the Eighth Judicial District.
This resolution was wholeheartedly supported by the entire
Western New York delegation. The complete report from
the Criminal Justice Section and the Committee
on Mandated Representation can be found here:

Capote

  President Marianne Mariano has
appointed Ashlyn Capote and Charlie
Kruly co-chairs of the BAEC's Young
Lawyers Committee (YLC). They suc-
ceed Katie Ireland and Aaron Aisen, who
provided years of dedicated service to the
Committee. Capote, an associate at
Goldberg Segalla LLP, has been actively
involved in the YLC for several years,
during which she has assisted with the
fall kick-off, spring book drive, and
annual toy drive. Kruly, who serves as a
law clerk to Hon. Richard J. Arcara, has
been involved in the YLC since moving
home to Buffalo in 2015.

Capote and Kruly have named new
                 executive council members for 2018-
Kruly 2019. New additions to the executive
council are chosen based on their initia-
tive and involvement in YLC activities. They assist the YLC
co-chairs in planning the Committee's many events. This
year's executive council members are Aaron Aisen, Andrew
Drilling, Christopher Grover, Cat McCulle, Deena Mueller-
Funke, Sarah Rera, Ashmita Roka, and Rachel Zucker.
The YLC is a very active and vibrant committee. Among
the events they host are Evening with the Judiciary, which
provides an opportunity for young lawyers to meet area judges
in an informal setting; Prepare to Practice, an event that pro-
vides advice to law students and undergraduates who are con-
sidering law school; and Life After Law School, a two-day
CLE for newly-admitted attorneys. The YLC also runs a toy
drive every holiday season, collects books for children every
spring, and hosts happy hours for its members.
YLC membership is open to all BAEC members who have
been practicing for ten years or fewer. Meetings are open to
all Committee members and are held on the third Friday of

every month at 12:15 p.m. at BAEC headquarters. If you
would like more information about the YLC, wish to receive
email reminders about YLC events and monthly meetings,
or are interested in sponsoring an event, please email Ashlyn
Capote at acapote@goldbergsegalla.com or Charlie Kruly at
ckruly@gmail.com.
