I BUFFALO 3, NEW YORK SEPTEMBER, 1964 Letter from The President Dear Members: It is never tasteful to broach the subject of raising funds. It is im- possible, however, for your as- sociation to operate efficiently without the necessary resources. We must rely in the main on our income from dues to accomplish our many tasks. If you have not paid your dues, it would be greatly appreciated if you would do so as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that you can be a sustaining member or a contributing member the details of which are printed on your dues notice. The Committees and their chair- men for the year 1964-1965 have all been selected and a printed list of all of them will be mailed to the members in the near future. Many of the new Committees have al- ready met and passed on important matters that arose during the sum- mer months. In many cases these Committees need funds to carry on their im- portant work. At the end of each year the chairmen of the more ac- tive Committees are requested to send to our Executive Secretary a proposed budget of expenses. This information is then turned over to our Budget, Finance and Dues Committee to assist in preparing a projected budget of expenses of the Bar Association for the ensuing year. It is no secret that we are operat- ing on a very close margin finan- cially. We are trying to be as careful as possible in our spending but we know you would not wish us to PRESIDENT'S LETTER (Continued on Page Eight) Notice Of Hearing Please Take Notice that pur- suant to Senate Resolution 147 adopted by the Senate at its 1964 Session, the New York State Senate Committee on Judiciary will hold public hearings on Court Delay and suggested rem- edies therefor at 10:00 A. M., October 16, 1964, Buffalo State Office Building, 65 Court Street, Buffalo, New York. All interested persons are in- vited to attend and give testi- mony. Persons intending to ap- pear are requested to notify E. Lisk Wyckoff, Jr., Committee Counsel, 36 West 44th Street, New York City, MU 2-3924, of their intention to appear at least five days prior to the scheduled time of hearing. MacNeil Mitchell, Chairman Senate Committee on Judiciary Annual Legal Checkup Drive To Open Oct. 18 The Bar Association of Erie County, in cooperation with the New York State Bar Association, will begin the promotion of the annual legal checkup on October 18, 1964. You will all get literature and information concerning this program and we hope that you will give it your full support and co- operation. It has been found in other areas in the United States where this has occurred that it has been a fine service to the public and a good means of establishing lawyer-client relations with persons who should have lawyers but have not been made conscious of it prior to this campaign. International Bar Association Meeting in Mexico City A Success I JRuTonN B- WALSH Criminal Law Seminar Planned The Erie County Trial Lawyers announce a seminar on Criminal Law to be held Saturday, October 24, at the BAC. The lectures, given by local criminal law experts, will begin at 9:30 a. m. and continue through the day. A luncheon is also included. The subjects and their respective speakers are: Autopsy Findings and Their Import in Criminal Mat- ters, Samuel Sanes, M. D.; Steps to Take When a Client Phones From a Police Lockup at 2 a. m., Robert P. Freedman; Recent U. S. Supreme Court Decisions and Their Practical Impact in Handling Criminal Matters, Herald P. Boccio, Clerk of the Erie County Family Court; Procedures for Bail and Facilities for Informa- tion to Defense Counsel in the Dis- trict Attorney's Office, Joseph P. V j.3 In the course of belonging to many legal societies and bar as- sociation sections and committees, I have attended many meetings of varying degrees of interest and ef- fectiveness. At the top of my list, however, I must place the meeting of the International Bar Association in Mexico City held from the 27th to the 31st of July, during this past summer. The combination of gracious Mexican hospitality, interesting topics, presented by informed per- sons and commented on by persons representing almost every country in the free world, and a spirit of camaraderie which led to informal discussions by those attending of problems common and some not so common, in the practice of law throughout the world, made the en- tire trip a meaningful, eventful and pleasant experience.
