INDIAN RIGHTS ASSOCIATION,
1305 ARCH STREET,
PHILADELPHIA, JANUARY, 1906.
A QUESTION OF NATIONAL HONOR.
HALL THE GOVERNMENT'S PLEDGE TO THE FIVE CIV-
ILIZED TRIBES BE KEPT?
At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Indian
Rights Association, held January 3, 1906, the following was
adopted:
Resolved, That it is the sense of this Association, as ex-
pressed through its Executive Committee, that we strongly favor
the plan of separate Statehood for the Indian Territory, in
view of the solemn promises made by the United States Gov-
ernment to these Indians that that idea should be ultimately
carried out; and also in view of the strong enforcing moral rea-
sons which exist in favor of it.
ATTEST: M. K. SNIFFEN, Secretary.
NOTE.
It is suggested that those who are in sympathy with the fore-
going should write at once to their representatives in the House
and the Senate protesting against the yoking of Indian Terri-
tory to Oklahoma (as is proposed by the pending Statehood
measure), and urging that the former be granted that independ-
ent self-government which has repeatedly been guaranteed. As
is said in Mr. Welsh's letter: Let this case be the one bright
exception to the long dark list of broken promises which have
marked our dealings with our helpless dependent Indian wards.
