                           CONSTITUTION
                              OF THlE
                 CUYAPAIPE BAND OF MISSION INDIANS

             CUYAPAIPE INDIAN RESERVATION, CALIFORNIA


We, the people of the Cuyapaipe Band of Mission Indians of California,
a band of Diegueno Indians, in order to establish a formal organiza-
tion so that the band members may help each other, and to improve and
develop the Cuyapaipe Reservation for the benefit of the band propose
this constitution for ratification and approval.

                    -    ARTICLE I - NAME

The name of this organization shll be the Cuyapaipe Band of Mission
Indians hereinafter referred to'as the band.

                      ARTICLE II - TERRITORY

The jurisdiction of the Cuyapaipe Band of Mission Indians shall extend
to the lands now and hereafter comprising the Cuyapaipe Indian
Reservation, California. In accordance with Public Law 280, the State
of California exercises civil and criminal jurisdiction over the band
members.

                     ARTICLE III- MEMBERSHIP

Section 1. The membership of the band shall consist of:

     (a) Persons whose names appear on the 1940 Census Roll of the
          Cuyapaipe Band, except where NE appears in Column 1
          opposite the names of certain persons, such persons shall
          not be eligible for membership.

      (b) Those persons adopted into membership by the Cuyapaipe Band
          of Mission Indians as approved by the Acting Area Director,
          Sacramento Area Office, dated March 29, 1972.

      (c) Persons of one-eighth (1/8) or more degree of Diegueno
          Indian blood who are lineal descendants of individuals who
          were living on or before 1890 and were members of the
          Cuyapaipe Band, provided their applications for enrollment
          are approved by a majority vote of the tribal governing body.
