Indian Population and Labor Force Report

 Purpose:

Public Law 102-477, the Indian Employment, Training, and Related
Services Demonstration Act of 1992, mandates the Bureau of Indian
Affairs to publish, not less than biennially, a report on the Indian
population eligible for services that the Secretary provides to Indian
people.

This report provides 2001 calendar year data of tribal enrollment, service
population, and labor force information for the Nation's 562 federally
recognized Indian tribes. All the data in this publication was determined
by representatives of each tribe and certified as accurate by their tribal
leader or designate.

Summary of 2001 Report:

Tribal Enrollment:

For 2001, 468 (83%) of the 562 federally recognized Indian tribes'
provided revised data for this report.

Note: Many of the tribes that did not provide updated population
and labor force information, identified the lack of staffing and
resources as the primary reason for not responding.

1 In addition to the 562 federally recognized Indian tribes, this Report includes
several corporate and at-large Alaska tribal entities that were formed as a result of
the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971.
