The theme I have chosen for this year is the role of the Association as the scholarly association for law professors. Here I will sketch some aspects of the work that can be done on continuing to enhance that role, extending the work that has already been done by a series of my predecessors. Before addressing two specific aspects of the Association's activities as a learned society, I want to frame my discussion with reference to two features of the Association that affect those activities. The first is obvious from the Association's name: Although the Association is indeed the learned society for legal academics, it is actually an association whose members are law schools, not law professors. Second, the AALS has new member On January 2, 2003, the Oklahoma City University School of Law became the 1651 member of the Association of American Law Schools at the Annual Meeting. Oklahoma City was welcomed unanimously by the AALS House of Representatives at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C. The Oklahoma City University School of Law com- menced operations in 1952, although its history can be traced back to predecessor institutions operating in earlier decades. It received accreditation from the American Bar Association in 1960. The law school pursues policies which reflect a commitment to equality of opportunity in legal education. The current dean of the law school is Lawrence Hellman, who has been dean since July 1998. Dean Hellman has been a member of the OCU law school faculty since 1977. The law school has 27 full-time tenured and tenure-track professors. Association is an association of professional schools. Both of these features affect the Association's scholarly agenda. The first, and probably the more important, of the topics is the Association's activity AALS PRESIDENT MARK TUSHNET in connection with the pending Supreme Court affirmative action case involving the University of Michigan and its law school. The Association has filed an amicus brief in the case, which draws the Court's attention to the specific benefits of affirmative action for legal education.
