Loh Members of the House of Representatives, colleagues, and friends: I'm honored to be asked to serve as the p6th president of AALS - especially Since I might be considered a fallen academic. To invert a well-known epigram: in ur profession, those who can, teach; hose who can't, practice; and those who an do neither - well, they become ampus bureaucrats. Thus, I accept the residency with respectfulness and esolve, mindful of the high responsibility ou are entrusting to me. AALS Presidency Since the founding of AALS in 1900, some of the most distinguished men and women in the history of legal education have occupied this office. I don't presume to be able to fit into their oversized shoes, but I have my own stride and direction. If I'm confident that I shall be a good 3teward, it's because I'm helped by good people. I'm privileged to count on the wise counsel of my colleagues on the Executive Committee, on the -ontributions of so many volunteer -ommittees and section members, on the Outstanding support and leadership provided by our Executive Director, Carl Monk, and on the unequalled dedication and capability of the AALS staff. The leadership of AALS is truly a collective effort. I can ask for no better role model than President Judith Wegner, who has served this past year with transforming acumen and exemplary grace. By her vision in launching a Resource Corps of trained faculty to help member schools learn from each other, by initiating a self study of the AALS so that it can better serve the membership, and by addressing with balance and lucidity the seismic changes that are now occurring in the accreditation of law schools, Judith has helped bring us together as a learned society and a learning society. I want to thank Betsy Levin, the former Executive Director, for recruiting me to participate in AALS activities nearly a decade ago. I' ve learned and grown substantially as a result of that participation and her mentorship. Emerson said that an institution is the lengthened shadow of its leader. The shadow I cast was formed by my life experiences and values. I came to this country at the age of 15, alone, without much money or knowledge of English, but I was sustained - as generations of immigrants before and after me were sustained - by faith in the American dream: that this is the land of liberty and hope, that with hard work and equal opportunity, nothing is beyond's one reach. Today, 35 years later, I'm proud that the American dream lives on. I'm humbled by the opportunity to serve this distinguished Association. I know that nothing is accomplished solely by dint of one's own efforts. This day was made possible by the bittersweet struggles for equality carried out by generations of pioneers that preceded me. It was made possible by the values for which AALS has come to represent: A passion for justice; a devotion to education as the great equalizer of conditions in a Wallace Loh democracy; a commitment to broadening the boundaries of inclusiveness of our profession, especially at a time when that commitment is under assault nationwide. I hope that the symbolism and conduct of my presidency will encourage the increasingly diverse students now in higher education.
