I am deeply honored by the opportunity you have given me to lead the Association of American Law Schools during the coming year. As we begin our work together, I want to offer you an agenda for our shared future of improving legal education. First, It is appropriate to acknow- ledge that we do not begin entirely Herma Hill Kay, AALS President. anew. The work of the Association is ongoing, and each new President has the responsibility of carrying forward the Initiatives begun by others. Several projects remain on our agenda, and will occupy much of our attention In 1989 and during the Annual Meeting In San Francisco In 1990. Prominent among these continuing projects are the proposals of several Special Committees appointed by earlier Presidents. These Include the Special Committee on the Recruitment and Retention of Minority Law Teachers, appointed by President Victor Rosenblum and chaired by Professor Robert Belton of Vanderbilt; the Special Committee to Review the Requirements of Membership of the Association of American Law Schools, appointed by President Susan Westerberg Prager and chaired by Professor David McCarthy of Georgetown; the Special Committee on Long-Range Planning, appointed by President Richard Huber and chaired by Professor Thomas Morgan of Emory; the Special Committee on Ethical and Professional Responsibilities of Law Professors, appointed by President Richard Huber and chaired by Professor Clark Byse of Harvard; and the Special Committee on the Impact of Elimination of Mandatory Retirement Requirements, appointed by President Richard Huber and chaired by Professor John Strong of Arizona.
