ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN LAW SCHOOLS e ONE DUPONT CIRCLE * WASHINGTON, D.C. 20036 NO. 86-1 MARCH 1986

                              PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

                                THE 1986 AGENDA

                          By Susan Westerberg Prager

It seems appropriate in this first newsletter of 1986 to note
with special admiration Roger Cramton's ability and determination to
focus the Association during his year as president on a number of
ideas. Roger proposed that the AALS create an Association sponsored,
peer reviewed, scholarly journal. He called for scholarly papers at
the New Orleans annual meeting, beginning a tradition which
strengthens our program by encouraging scholarship, particularly on
the part of younger scholars. He boldly suggested that we work
significant changes in the time, place and manner of law placement
(perhaps through the device of a series of regional recruiting
conferences), and he challenged the prevailing view of accreditation.
While many of us will undoubtedly have difficulty embracing all of
Roger's ideas, (I certainly have had my share of disagreements with
his views, particularly those on accreditation), we owe him a great
deal for creating one of the most lively and productive of the
    Association's 85 years.
As I anticipate the coming months, I realize that much of our
time will be devoted to further assessing and implementing a number of
the ideas Roger has not only presented but caused to be evaluated
during his term as AALS president. We will work to bring the
scholarly journal into being, starting with the search for its first
editor, a search which Professor Richard Stewart of Harvard will
chair. A Joint Committee of the National Association for Law
Placement and our Association will assess the possibilities for wide-
ranging changes in the law placement process, using Professor
Cramton's reconception as the starting point for discussion. We will
attempt both to review the AALS accreditation standards and to
redirect the AALS accreditation process to focus more on serious
problems and less on minor ones. The theme that connects the projects
which Roger outlined is the one that he made central in his
presidential address, the importance of focusing the Association on
its role in strengthening the central academic mission of our law
schools. That, of course, is an ongoing theme that has played an
increasingly large role in the work of the AALS during the last
decade, as the Association's professional devleopment program has been
    developed and refined.
The most important new work during this year will be the
selection of a successor to Millard Ruud, who will be retiring as our
executive director in July 1987. Because Millard is truly irre-
placeable, President-elect Vic Rosenblum and I plan to devote much of
