There were 1,853 registered participants, certainly the largest number ever to take part in an AALS Annual Meeting. With wives and other family members, we filled two hotels and had many rooms in several others. The addresses and the proceedings of the round tables dealing with the theme of the meeting, Legal Education and the Developing Countries, will be published in a separate issue of the Journal of Legal Education as soon as the editing process is completed. 1969: As previously announced, the 1969 Annual Meeting will be held in San Francisco, with the San Francisco Hilton as the headquarters hotel. President Lockhart has selected the theme, Contemporary Social Research, The Law and the Law School, as the dominant subject for the principal addresses and most of the round tables. Pro- fessors Maurice Rosenberg and Harry Kalven are the co-chairmen of the Program Committee, and Professor Roger Cramton is acting as coordinator of the program planning. A grant from the Walter E. Meyer Research Institute of Law has been made available for the planning and preparation for the meeting. Relevant to the annual meeting and its theme was a conference on Legal Education and the Social Sciences, which was attended by about two dozen participants at the headquarters of the National Science Foundation in Washington on February 10 and 11, 1969, and supported by a grant from the Foundation. A report on the conference will be distributed shortly. 1970 Committee Memberships Enclosed with this Newsletter is a message from President-Elect Jefferson Fordham, soliciting expressions of interest and preference in committee assignments for 1970. It will be helpful to him, in making appointments to committees, if he can receive a generous response to this request. Libraries Standards On January 17, 1969, there was mailed from the Office of the Executive Director an announcement of the promulgation of revised Regulation 8 of the AALS Executive Committee Regulations, dealing with standards for law school libraries. The Regulation had been promulgated by the Executive Committee on December 29, 1968, as a result of the action by the membership in amending paragraph 8 of Section 6-1 of Article 6 of the AALS Articles of Association at the general session on December 29, 1968. Copies of the Reg- ulations were duly sent to all member schools, and will remain in force unless, within 60 days from the date of mailing, one fourth of the member schools register objection. Law Students and the Draft Other than the Armendaris (also spelled Armendariz) case, mentioned below, there have not been any significant developments concerning Selective Service in the last several months. Although statutory authorization to induct for training and service ex- pires on July 1, 1971 (not June 30, 1969, as stated in the previous Newsletter), several changes are being proposed. As has been extensively reported in the press, proposals, similar to earlier ones, are currently being considered to institute the so-called MICHAEL H. CARDOZO.
