AALL in New Orleans: A Feast for the Mind
and the Senses

Taking it easy by the Mississippi River, AALL members gathered on Sunday, July 21
for the start of the 1991 New Orleans Annual Meeting.
With 2,600 law librarians, information vendors. AALL staff members, speakers,
and invited guests in attendance, the 84th Annual Meeting in New Orleans was a fiery
blend of peppery program topics, zesty culinary concoctions, and blistering music.
The final attendance figures place the 1991 Meeting third on the list of most attended
Annual Meetings.
The week began on a slow simmer at a picture-perfect Opening Reception on
Riverfront Plaza and moved inexorably to a rolling boil by the time we reached the

too, but not as hot as the rest of the country, according to reports that kept arriving
from home.
Business first. Based on tallies from the registration sheets and spot counts of
actual programs, the most popular sessions were those that dealt with the practical
aspects of law librarianship: Teaching Legal Research to the MTV Generation,
Tapping the Wealth of International and Foreign Law-Related Materials in U.S.
Databases, A Reference Smorgasbord, and To Buy or Not to Buy, That is the
Question: Looseleaf Treatises and Their Upkeep. The Donahue Looks at Library
Images program was also popular; perhaps many had been tipped off that the session
would include film clips!
By far, the best turnout was for the keynote speech by ALA President Patricia
Glass Schuman. Close to 1,000 people crowded the room to hear Schuman's declara-
tion that the American people's right to information access is in jeopardy. She urged
