The dramatic presence of the Sierra Nevadas and the beautiful weather certainly contrasted with the oft-discussed decor of Bally's Hotel. On the other hand, the hotel proved to be quite capable of handling a gathering of AALL's size. Amazingly, both of the Meet- ing's main speakers, Marie Ragghianti at the Opening Luncheon and Ruby Dee at the Closing Banquet, spoke of the impact that one person can have on society. It was a fitting thought for a convention that evolved from the work of many individuals. As 1989 AALL President, Margaret Leary led the proceedings with her usual grace and wit. The business meetings, with the volatile topic of a dues increase, were run deftly and professionally. When presenting her with a framed drawing by Reno artist Tom Summers, 1989 President Dick Danner cited the dedication and intelligence with which Margaret accomplished her goals for the Association. Mark Estes Coordinated by the first Far-Flung Local Reno Program Chair Arrangements Committee, the Meeting progressed as smoothly as if it had been held in everyone's own backyard. Local Arrangements Chair Sandy Marz was able assisted by Function Coordinators Suzanne Miller and Susan Southwick (easily identified by the walkie-talkies they were attached to all week long), Registration Chair Ken Halicki, Supplies Chair Michele Finerty, Exhibits Chair Paul George, Hospitality Chair Katherine Henderson, Publicity Chair Clara Kelly, Office Chair Harva Sheeler, and Volunteer Chair David Thomas. They, in turn, depended on the work of dozens of other volunteers. The Tumbleweed Times staff, headed by Frank Liu, worked diligently to turn out an informative daily paper. A comprehensive education program, orches- trated by Program Chair Mark Estes with help from Assistant Chair Elaine Blum, began on a historical note with Overheard at the Bar: Eavesdropping on AALL History. Conducted by Frank Houdek, Law Library Director at the Southern Illinois University School of Law and a distinguished panel of past presi- dents, the program was, by all accounts, an insightful Sandy Marz look into AALL's past. Throughout the week, AALL Reno Local Arrangement Chair members had the opportunity to expand their roles as librarians and responsible members of society through programs that centered on the theme of Values and Resources. These programs would not have been possible without the Program Coordinators who lent their considerable talents and skills. Much of the credit for Reno's success goes to Margaret Lundahl, Convention Manager at AALL Headquarters, and the staff of her consulting firm, Lundahl Enterprises. Margaret's desk may have been piled precariously high with files and registration forms, but she always knew where everything was and what small details needed attention. Continued on page 4
