The Ballad of Leroy Powell

handle is hein.journals/uclalr16 and id is 141 raw text is: THE BALLAD OF LEROY POWELLt
Gary V. Dubin*
In a Texas town Leroy Powell was found,
Intoxicated, helpless, and lying on the ground.
And so began an unusual tale
Revolving poor Leroy in and out of jail.
From a humble tavern, where shoes he would shine,
The proceeds of which he invested in wine,
To the U.S. Supreme Court he finally went,
In an effort to overthrow precedent.
In the criminal law pages he made his fame,
For his name posterity will always acclaim.
Miranda and Gideon we'll long forget,
But to Leroy Powell we'll recall our debt.
Yes, this man succeeded where others had failed.
With Powell v. Texas new doctrines prevailed.
Controversial his story, its message enthralling,
To its beginnings our attention is calling.
Drink a toast to poor Leroy.
He's always in jail.
A toast to poor Leroy.
He has yet to make bail.
