HAROLD GRAHAM MACKEURTAN- AN
APPRECIATION.
Graham Mackeurtan! What memories that name recalls!
He was vir amplissimus * indeed; big in body, big in mind,
big in everything. But I must begin at the beginning.
He was born at Durban on 26th February, 1884. His
parents were George and Nell Mackeurtan (born Birt). Both
are dead. George Mackeurtan, who was, of course, a Scots-
man, was originally a banker, but he became an accountant
when he was over fifty and founded the well-known Durban-

Mackeurtan, O.B.E., was a very talented woman and was
a leading figure in Durban society for many years. Her family
were 1820 Settlers. Mr. and Mrs. Mackeurtan sent their
son to Durban High School in 1892, when he was eight years
old. He left in 1901, when he was seventeen. He won
many prizes, and, having passed the Oxford Junior examina-

matriculation examination at the age of fifteen. He came

* This extraordinarily apt description is borrowed from T. B. Horwood's
dedication to Mackeurtan of the translation of Voet, Book XXII.
