I. BE FRUITFUL AND MULTIPLY
The tenets of Judaic law,' or halakha, govern decisions, acts, and
practices of observant Jews in their daily lives, from birth to death. Halakha
Professor of Biology, William Paterson University of New Jersey, Wayne, N.J. 07470.
1. Jewish law, or halakha, is based on the major Jewish texts, which include the Tanach [Old
Testament, Five Books of Moses], or Written Law, and its commentaries, the Talmud [Mishnah and
Gemara], or Oral Law, and its commentaries, and layer upon layer of rabbinic responses to
questions arising in the Talmud, and questions arising from day-to-day situations and events. The
evolution of halakha spans three thousand five hundred years, from Moses to modem rabbinic
scholars.
