In the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the title charac-
ter finds himself on a small boat, grappling with a Middle Eastern reli-
gious zealot as their craft is about to be pulverized by the giant propel-
ler of a larger ship. Indiana Jones threatens the man, indicating that if
he does not say where his father is being imprisoned, both will die.
My soul is prepared, Dr. Jones' opponent replies. How's yours?
Based upon the response of Indiana Jones, the archaeologist clearly
isn't ready to be a martyr just yet.
Many wonder whether America is indeed able to fight the scourge
of suicide terrorism against an opponent who seems more willing to
die for a higher cause. This article will shed some light upon exactly
when terrorists choose to employ suicide terrorism, testing a variety
of hypotheses about the location, timing and lethality of such
attacks.
The Limits Of Induction4
For most Americans, suicide terrorism began on October 23, 1983.
According to The Economist' Hizbullah's campaign of suicidal car and
truck explosions-one of which killed 241 Americans in Beirut in Oc-
tober 1983, 58 people died in a strike on a French barracks on the same
day-changed the face of terror.6 Yet that devastating attack was not
the first of its kind. A similar event occurred earlier that year at the
