3 Arab L.Q. 229 (1988)
Issue 3

handle is hein.journals/arablq3 and id is 239 raw text is: INTRODUCTION
We are able to present varied topics this issue. An article by Richard Price and
Christopher Walsh on the Bahrain Bankruptcy and Composition Law illustrates
another state's reaction to the problems of insolvency and their solutions, a topic that
is receiving close attention in most parts of the world.
The effects of rent control in Egypt are explored further in the second of three
articles by Betsy Birns McCall, and Professor Rudolph Peters considers the appli-
cation of the shari'a in Egypt in a timely contribution, pointing out how far in fact the
reform of the law has gone, and the likely ways forward.
The environment is another topic much to the fore in the 1980s, and Dr. Omar
Bakhashab's article on Islamic Law and the Environment; Some Basic Principles,
reminds us that the ideas of safeguarding and protecting the environment are not new,
and have a traditional place in Islamic teaching.
This issue also contains Book IX of the Mejelle, on Interdiction, Constraint, and
Pre-emption, together with notes on two recent pieces of Egyptian legislation.
