Dr. Sells is Research Professor and Director of the Institute of Behav-
ioral Research at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas. He is
Associate Editor of the quarterly journal Multivariate Behavioral Re-
search. Dr. Chatham is Chief of the Narcotic Addict Rehabilitation
Branch, Division of Narcotic Addiction and Drug Abuse of the National
Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Mr. Retka is a Public Health
Analyst with the Narcotic Addict Rehabilitation Branch, Division of
Narcotic Addiction and Drug Abuse of the NIMH.
This is a report of a study of rates and causes of death among
narcotic addicts. With the dramatic increase in public concern
over the problem of opiate addiction there has also been a
growing awareness of the enormous costs to society and to
the individual addict attributable to the illicit use of opiates.
