The Role of Comforting Skills and Professional Competence in the
Attorney-Client Relationship
There has been little empirical research examining the attorney-client
relationship. Clearly this is due, in part, to the difficulties involved observ-
ing and recording interactions between attorneys and clients.' One problem
researchers have had in trying to work with attorneys is that the research-
ers fail to make their research meaningful for the attorneys, which leaves
attorneys without much reason to assist researchers. Research examining
interpersonal skills in the attorney-client relationship has great potential
for advancing both theoretical and applied lines of research. Not only can
researchers examine how the unique context of the attorney-client relation-
ship influences communication, but attorneys can gain insights into how
their interpersonal skills coincide with their professional expertise in serving
their clients.
The Importance of Interpersonal Skills in Lawyering
Law schools provide little training for prospective attorneys in the
interpersonal skills that they may need as lawyers.3 Yet, the ability to
communicate effectively with clients may be linked with some attorneys'
