University (2002). © 2007, Heidi H. Boas. As a 2007 Equal Justice Works Fellow, Ms. Boas will
spend the next two years providing immigration legal services and outreach about domestic violence
to the African immigrant and refugee community in Washington, D.C. Before law school, Ms. Boas
conducted research in Kenya with refugee women living in Kakuma refugee camp (near the Sudan
border) and in the urban slums of Nairobi. She also worked in Ghana, where she helped advocate for a
new law to protect survivors of domestic violence. Ms. Boas has also interned with the office of the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Panama and with the Executive Office for
Immigration Review in San Francisco. She would like to thank Kate Jastram, Lecturer in Refugee
Law and Global Migration Issues at Boalt Hall, for her invaluable mentorship throughout the process
of researching and writing this article.
