Nevertheless, hopefully Hosseini's book, as well as the upcoming film version of the book, will educate Americans about the plight of the Afghan refugees. Spotlight On: Planned Parenthood by Thomas Richards Out of the more than 20 million teens in the U.S., nearly three out of every ten are sexually active and of those, nearly 300,000 teenagers under the age of eighteen face unintended pregnancies every year. Although the percentage of sexually active teenagers has recently been on the decline, nearly six million teens may require some form of birth control or protection against sexually transmitted diseases or other information and services surrounding the issue of reproduction. Planned Parenthood is a nationwide non-profit organization that aims to address these needs. Planned Parenthood (PP) believes that the freedom to manage one's own fertility is a fundamental right; a fundamental right that should not be abrogated by any criteria, including age. Among the most controversial services PP provides are the ones they provide to teenagers. PP provides three main services to teenagers: education and information, contraception methods via clinics, and abortions. Politicians and political groups have met each of those services with pointed resistance. PP garners so much attention from opposition groups not only because of their philosophy, but also because of their efficacy. PP serves nearly five million men and women each year through affiliates in every state, and twenty-six percent of those five million are teenagers nineteen years old or younger. PP is an extensive grassroots direct service provider that impacts the national dialogue about teenage access to reproductive services. Due to PP's efficacy, politicians and political groups have waged a campaign characterized by diverse tactics to combat PP's information, access to contraception, and access to abortion. The federal government is now granting more funding to abstinence-only groups to combat PP's education to teenagers. PP's clinics will also prescribe emergency contraception (commonly known as the morning after pill), a drug which many pharmacies have restricted patient access to by refusing to fill valid prescriptions. Finally, to maintain teenage access to abortion, PP has had to fend off attacks in the courts and otherwise remain active in the judiciary. Vol. 27 * No. 2 * Summer 2007
