Social Change, and
Success Too

By Susan Vaughn
SURELY you've heard about some of their
cases:
e An Auschwitz survivor who sued the
radical right-wing Institute for Historical
Review after it offered a reward to any-
one who could prove the Holocaust actu-
ally occurred. He sued to collect the
reward.
* Lynn Redgrave sued the producers
of Housecalls after she was fired for
breastfeeding on the set.
e Two lesbians successfully challenged
a posh Los Angeles restaurant's ban of
homosexual couples in its couples only
dining section.
For Allred, Maroko, Goldberg &
Ribakoff, making headlines is an almost
daily event. Administrative assistant
Debbie Wuliger has assembled 24 vol-
umes of press clippings about the firm
since its inception in 1976. And this
doesn't include the wire stories that run
in papers throughout the United States,
she added.
Plans change
The 13-attorney firm had its beginnings
at Loyola Law School in downtown Los
Angeles where Gloria Allred, Michael
Maroko and Nathan Goldberg met as
classmates. Allred originally planned to
open an all-female feminist law practice,
but her two intended partners backed out
at the last minute.
Then I asked Nat and Mike, said
Allred. It was one of the best decisions
of my life.
Allred and Maroko set up quarters in
February 1976 on Sunset Boulevard in
Los Angeles. Goldberg joined the part-

Debbie Wulinger
nership two months later. The suite was
shared by a group of new attorneys, each
with a budding law practice. All made use
of a centralized law library, receptionist
and mail service.
The three partners pooled their talents
to form a competitive practice. Allred,
43, had spent the previous four years
working on California governor Jerry
Brown's campaign and as a National Or-
ganization for Women volunteer. Mar-
oko, 34, left his position with Monteleone
& McCrory, a construction law firm, to
join Allred. Nathan Goldberg, 38, who
graduated first of 328 Loyola classmates,
abandoned a promising career with
Swerdlow, Miller, Seal & Swerdlow, a
Beverly Hills law office, where he han-
dled motion picture antitrust cases.
I was scared about taking the leap,
but it was now or never, said Maroko.
I knew that the longer I waited, the
harder it would be for me. Particularly
the financial risk.
