I. INTRODUCTION
In the recently popular movie Mrs. Doubtfire,' the father is the
victim of an unfair family law system. Robin Williams portrays a lov-
ing and devoted father who is ousted from his home and prevented by
an archaic judge from seeing his children more than once a week. His
pleas for compassion fall on deaf ears; instead he is commanded to get
his life in order by getting and keeping a job, maintaining an apart-
ment suitable for children, and returning to court in ninety days to
replead his case.
Williams' character does pull his life together, and, after fulfilling
these court mandates, he returns to court at the appointed time.
Again the judge treats him as an outcast, as an unfit parent, refusing
to understand the lengths to which a father may be forced to go in
order to be with his children. Instead, the judge awards full custody to
the mother. He does not appear to give even an afterthought to the
idea that perhaps it is in the best interests of these children to be with
their father.
